Jetoptera J-2000 is a True eVTOL Flying Car with No Ducted Fans or Rotating Blades

Remember the famous Jetsons flying cars? One thing we can remember was that they were unlike any of the flying cars we see emerging today that have ducted fans and rotating blades. However, a Washington based startup Jetoptera has created a flying car more in line with the Jetsons flying cars that has no ducted fans or rotating blades.

The J-2000 as it is known is a futuristic looking flying car that will have eVTOL capabilities and be able to fly at speeds of 200 mph with a total range of 200 miles. The company envisions the use of the J-2000 primarily in the air taxi role thanks to its super quiet operation, speed, extended range, and its ability to hover.

Unlike other eVTOLs that rely on ducted fans or drone-like rotating blades, the J-2000 achieves fight based on the principle of a bladeless fan which comprises of moving mechanical parts within an enclosure. Known as fluidic propulsion, carefully designed tubes and small motors, create compressed air that forces much larger volumes of air to flow rapidly over wing-shaped sections of the aircraft to create lift.

Current versions of the J-2000 use gas generators to power the aircraft propulsion system. However, future versions will use battery technology. When that becomes more mainstream in the aviation space, the J-2000 is already fully adapted to run on batteries.

The J-2000 is one of several flying cars that won a competition by the US Air Force to create a high-speed electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft (HSEVTOL). The J-2000 was selected along with 35 other designs to move the next phase of the program.
