The Seoul Ring Will be the World’s First and Largest Spokeless Ferris Wheel

Ferris wheels have become a staple of entertainment and amusement parks around the world. However, the general design of Ferris wheels has remained virtually unchanged ever since their introduction. Ferris wheels are still made like a giant bicycle wheel with steel spokes connected to a central hub.

All that will change when the new Seoul Ring becomes operational in Seoul South Korea. It will be the world’s largest spokeless Ferris wheel that will reach an impressive maximum height of 590 ft and provide riders with stunning views of the surrounding city.

The new Seoul Ring will not be the largest Ferris wheel in the world, that title is currently held by the Ain Dubai in the UAE which reaches a maximum height of 820 ft. However, what sets the Seoul Ring apart from the Ain Dubai is that it will be completely spokeless employing modern technologies that will give it the appearance of a free-standing wheel.

Although little detail is known about how it will operate, it’s believed it will not rotate like a typical Ferris wheel but rather carriages with passengers will be pulled around the exterior rim using a geared system with the main ring remaining stationery.

Lastly, unlike traditional Ferris wheels that expose carriages to the open air, the Seoul Ring carriages will be concealed in what appears to be a transparent encasement of the entire ring as seen from renderings. Once in operation it will host approximately 1,470 passengers per hour with a maximum projection of around 11,790 passengers per day.
