Chinese EV-Battery Manufacturer CATL Unveils Battery Able to Provide up to 620 Miles of Driving Range on a Single Charge

Owners of electric vehicles might never have to worry about how far they can go on a single charge again. Last week, Chinese battery maker CATL, the world’s biggest EV-battery manufacturer unveiled a new battery technology that it claims can deliver more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles) of driving range.

Known as Qilin, the battery packs a lot of energy into a small space, according to CATL, which also supplies batteries to Tesla. This is possible because of breakthroughs in both chemistry and packaging that reduces the size of the battery without reducing its efficiency and power storage. The battery has an energy density of 255 watt-hours per kilogram.

According to CATL, it will be 13% more powerful than the 4680 batteries Tesla just began utilizing for its Model Y SUVs. The company announced that it will start producing the next-generation Qilin battery next year for Chinese electric vehicles.
