Vietnam’s New 2000-Foot Glass-Bottomed Bridge May be The Longest in the World
Vietnam just opened a 2000-foot glass-bottomed bridge that may be the longest glass bridge in the world, longer than the current titleholder in China. The bridge is a pedestrian walkway that is suspended high above a 500-foot deep ravine.
Known affectionately as Bach Long which means “white dragon”, the glass-bottomed pedestrian bridge has three layers of 40 mm (1.5 inch) tempered glass that makes up the pedestrian walkway. Despite the thin glass, the bridge can hold up to 500 people at any given time.
If you are afraid of heights, Bach Long should not be on your vacation list. As you get to the center of the bridge you can’t help but experience the exhilarating feeling of walking on thin air. For thrill seekers, Bach Long is the ultimate travel destination although bungee jumping is not allowed.
The bridge opened in April to pedestrian traffic and is located in the Moc Chau district of Vietnam’s northwestern Son La province. It measures 632 meters (2,073 feet) in length and the company behind its construction says its the worlds longest glass-bottomed bridge. Although that has yet to be confirmed, Guinness World Record officials plan to visit the site later this month to ascertain the claim.
The Bach Long bridge is part of Vietnam effort to rebuild the country’s tourism industry which was practically destroyed over the last two years by the Covid-19 pandemic.
